When I tell people that I’m not voting, I most often immediately hear something along the lines of “You do realize that by not voting you’re essentially letting the worst candidate win?”

I want to address this sentiment, because it illustrates exactly why I refuse to vote.

At the democratic national convention, Sanders supporters were put behind a “free speech” cage and threatened that if they didn’t fall in line and support Clinton, then Trump would win and he would destroy us all.

“Do as I say or we both will be destroyed.” It’s a threat. That kind of threat is indicative of an abusive relationship. You are being given an ultimatum by someone who is blatantly manipulative.

The lesser of two evils is still evil, and I will not give my consent to evil. I would rather be destroyed and die with the satisfaction of knowing that I did not allow myself to be held hostage for the benefit of someone who is willing to threaten me with destruction in order to get what they want.

If your options are either evil or evil, then the whole system needs to be destroyed anyways. By voting and giving your consent to either of the evils, you are complicit in perpetuating their evil and your own hostage situation.

The only winning move is not to play.
